Dog Flu Spreads Worry Nationwide

A newly discovered virus has killed dogs in at least seven states, and veterinarians, kennel operators and pet owners are concerned because researchers say there is no vaccine and dogs do not have immunity to the new flu.

Dr. Cynda Crawford, an immunologist at the University of Florida’s College of Veterinary Medicine, said in an audio interview posted on the university Web site that the disease is only deadly in rare cases — about 10 percent in puppies and old dogs — but is of concern because it is spreading rapidly. -ABC News

Mmmm…Big Calamari

Japanese scientists have taken the first photographs of one of the most mysterious creatures in the deep ocean — the giant squid.

Until now the only information about the behavior of the creatures, which measure up to 59 feet (18 meters) in length, has been based on dead or dying squid washed up on shore or captured in commercial fishing nets. - MSNBC

Calamari (Italian for squid) has long been an international delicacy especially in Asia and the Mediterranean. The sweet tasting, mild meat of the calamari has a firm texture and is highly versatile so it lends itself well to a variety of mouthwatering calamari recipes. Squid are low in fat as well as an excellent source of protein. - Gortons Of Gloucester

Piranha Bites Manila Airport Inspector

A routine check of a shipment at Manila airport turned bloody when a piranha sprung up and bit one of the inspectors.

“I was checking one of the boxes when suddenly, something leaped out of it and bit me,” fisheries quarantine inspector Mario Trio told the Philippine Daily Inquirer in a report published Tuesday.

The bite left a V-shaped wound on the inspector’s finger, and the 34 piranhas in the consignment he was checking — falsely declared as “ornamental fish” from Peru — were confiscated over the weekend, but died two days later, the newspaper reported.

The Filipino consignee faces charges of illegally importing live piranhas, punishable by up to eight years in prison and a fine, quarantine chief Felipe Santamaria said.- Yahoo News
