Giants pay tribute to Mara, blow out ‘Skins

Tiki Barber put the finishing touch on the best running day of his career, then made one of the most important runs for the New York Giants.

Barber scored late in the third quarter of the New York Giants’ 36-0 rout of the Washington Redskins on Sunday, ran straight to the Giants sideline and presented the ball to Tim McDonnell, grandson of owner Wellington Mara, who died of cancer Tuesday at 89.

“I told him, ’This is for you, this is for your grandfather,”’ Barber said after the game. “It was a big day and a special day for me, especially considering the events of the past week. It’s something I’ll never forget.” - MSNBC

New Yorkers Say City Smells Like Syrup

The Maple Syrup Mystery thickened Friday, with reports of a sweet but untraceable smell tickling noses from Astoria to Staten Island.

“It seems to be moving around, and everybody’s checking to make sure it’s nothing dangerous,” Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Friday at a Chinatown news conference.

While police and other government officials were at a loss to explain the origins of the syrup-like odor that first wafted over lower Manhattan Thursday night, they weren’t waffling over a response.

By midday, the Police Department, Department of Environmental Protection, Office of Emergency Management and the Coast Guard were attempting to trace its origins.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said the city had fielded 65 calls from citizens concerned about the sweet smell, last reported breezing west toward New Jersey.

Kelly said the NYPD had tested air around Manhattan and determined that the scent — described as evoking syrup, hazelnut coffee or vanilla cake — was nontoxic. - Newsday

Giants Owner Wellington Mara Dies

The most significant figure in the history of the New York Giants has passed. Wellington Mara, the Giants’ President and Co-Chief Executive Officer died today at the age of 89.

The team released a statement, saying Mara peacefully passed away at his home in Rye, N.Y., at 9:26 a.m. He surrounded by his wife, Ann, his 11 children and their spouses, and many of his 40 grandchildren.

The last Giants game of Mara’s life was Sunday’s thrilling 24-23 victory over Denver. Team officials say that prior to the game, Coach Tom Coughlin had talked to the players about Mr. Mara, as well as the Giants’ other owner, Bob Tisch ,who is suffering from brain cancer. After the Giants won the game on an Eli Manning touchdown pass to Amani Toomer with five seconds remaining, Coughlin spoke to the team in the locker room. The players then came together in a tight circle, raised their hands and chanted, “Duke, Duke, Duke.” Mara’s nickname was “Duke.” - WCBS2

Sin City TV series on way

Sin City, Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller’s adaptation of the latter’s noirish graphic novels, is to be made into a TV series.

The project is one of several on a tantalising slate for a new TV production company being set up by the Weinstein brothers through their new outfit, The Weinstein Co.

The Miramax founders, who left their own firm after a dispute with parent company Disney over their desire to make larger, more costly films, look set to use all their big screen connections as they vie to make inroads in the television sphere. - Gaurdian Unlimited
