Watch out, Superman! Scientists have found a mineral on Earth with the same components as kryptonite, the space rock that erodes your powers.
The mineral was found in Serbia by geologists with Rio Tinto Plc, the world’s third-largest mining company, London’s Natural History Museum said today. After being unable to match the rock to any known mineral, they sought help from Chris Stanley, a mineralogist at the museum. Working with Canada’s National Research Council, the scientists identified the chemical components of the mineral, then turned to the Internet.
“I just typed into Google `sodium lithium boron silicate hydroxide,’ and this match with kryptonite came up. It was really astonishing,” Stanley said in a telephone interview today. - Bloomberg

The Cardinals shortstop in that game was Ozzie Smith, another future Hall of Famer. Keith Hernandez was the Cardinals first baseman.
Twenty-five years has its way of blurring memories. So it is with Julio Franco, who, on the silver anniversary of his big-league debut, can’t dig out details of the night that became the intro to an epic.
“There’s not too many guys that can say they’re here 25 years later,” Franco said of the gaffe. “So I’ll take that.” - MLB

With a philosophy centered on family, personal responsibility and the desire to make a difference, I will build a brighter future for all the constituents of the 30th Congressional District.

Orphaned at 8, raised on the Manila streets where he hawked cigarettes, he had hustled a job at a government sports complex and held it for nearly two decades. On the spectrum of Filipino poverty, that alone marked him as a man of modest fortune. But a monthly salary of $50 did not keep his family fed. While some migrants go abroad with Ph.D.’s, most travel as Emmet did, with modest skills but fearsome motivation.
About 200 million migrants from different countries are scattered across the globe, supporting a population back home that is as big if not bigger. Were these half-billion or so people to constitute a state — migration nation — it would rank as the world’s third-largest. A million Overseas Filipino Workers — O.F.W.’s — left last year, enough to fill six 747s a day. Read the full article in the New York Times
