Shea it isn’t so: Mets fan ejected for three years

A New York Mets fan has been ejected from Shea Stadium for three years after pleading guilty on Tuesday to shining a high-powered flashlight at an Atlanta Braves pitcher and shortstop during a game there last month.

Frank Martinez, 40, of the Bronx, also must spend 15 days behind bars as part of his sentence for interfering with a professional sporting event.

“In a game in which the ball can travel upward of 110 mph, the defendant’s actions were dangerous to both spectators and players,” Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said in a statement. - ESPN

Channel 13 - Due East

In honor of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, celebrated each May, Channel 13 (WNET) & PBS will present a special line-up of new and encore presentations that focus on Asians and Pacific Islanders and their vibrant cultural heritage in the United States. Reflecting the diversity of ethnicities, experiences and regions with a breadth unlikely to be found anywhere else, these compelling programs examine the rich history, cultural contributions and fascinating heritage of Asian Pacific Americans.

Among the programming, there will be a 3-part series starting on Sat. May 05th at 2:30 p.m. called “Searching for Asian America“. Through intimate profiles of individuals and communities from across the country, this program serves up a genuine taste of what it’s like to be Asian American in today’s ever-changing United States. One story in particular involves Martin Bautista and Jeffrey Lim, who are Filipino immigrant doctors living in the predominantly Caucasian, hog-farming heartland of Guymon, Oklahoma. As their story unfolds, it’s apparent that being Asian American in a rural town is both more challenging and more rewarding than either could have expected. The remaining two parts will air on the subsequent Saturdays at the same time.

On Tuesday, May 8th, watch “Grassroots Rising“. This exploration of the working class roots of the Asian-American experience focuses on the resurgence of grassroots political activism among Asian and Pacific Islander working class families in Los Angeles. It juxtaposes poetry by spoken word artist Alison de la Cruz with the stories of immigrants and activists. From Thai garment workers forced into slave labor to Filipino healthcare workers exploited for their cheap labor to Koreatown restaurant workers fired arbitrarily, they are finding hope with the help of innovative organizations.

THE SLANTED SCREEN, first airing on Sunday, May 20th, examines portrayals of Asian men in film and television, and how a new generation of independent filmmakers are re-defining age-old stereotypes. This documentary includes interviews with award-winning veteran actor Mako, actors Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, James Shigeta, Dustin Nguyen, Phillip Rhee, Tzi Ma, Jason Scott Lee, comedian Bobby Lee, producer Terence Chang and casting director Heidi Levitt.

These are just a few of the programs being aired in the month of May related to Channel 13’s “Due East” spotlight. For more information you can go to the Channel 13 website or Searching for Asian America
