Mets Fire Willie!
Announcement came in at 3:15am.
Willie Randolph was fired as manager of the New York Mets early Tuesday after their win over the Los Angeles Angels. He was replaced by Jerry Manuel.
While the timing was surprising, Randolph’s job security had been an open question for more than a month. The high-priced Mets are just 34-45, fourth in the National League East, and injuries and clubhouse squabbles have added to their woes.
Pitching coach Rick Peterson and first base coach Tom Nieto also were fired in an enormous overhaul that came at a stunning time - about two hours after New York’s 9-6 victory at the Los Angeles Angels.
